Veil Nebula (NGC 6992) in Cygnus

Camera: SBIG ST-10XME
Filters: Astrodon LRGB
Dates: July 1-3, 2008
Exposure: LRGB: L=27x5min, RGB=30R, 28G, 26Bx5min each for 9.25 hours total at -20C
Notes: This is the eastern portion of the Veil Nebula, or Cygnus Loop, a supernova remant.  The supernova exploded 5,000 to 8,000 years ago, and the remnants have been expanding ever since.  The distance to the Veil nebula isn't well known, estimates range from 1,400 to 2,600 light years.
